They are suspects in the fatal shooting that led to the death of Dr Victoria Mutiso. It has emerged that an intelligence-led operation, with support from Interpol, led authorities to the Kamapala hideout of three men suspected of involvement in the brazen murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso in Nairobi. The trio suspected of being part of the gang that killed the clinical psychiatrist 35 days ago was presented before a Milimani court on Wednesday after being deported from Uganda, where they had reportedly gone into hiding.Slain clinical psychologist and mental health researcher Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.Police Constable Collins Kiplangat Bett, Pius Muiru Mbugua alias Headboy, and Samuel Karanja Gathoni alias Wakili will be held in custody for 30 days after the court allowed police time to conclude investigations into their roles in the gruesome murder. From right: Police Constable Collins Kiplangat Bett, Pius Muiru Mbugua and Samuel Karanja Gathoni in court. They are suspects in the fatal shooting that led to the death of Dr Victoria Mutiso. The court was told that Gathoni was identified as the driver of a motor vehicle, KDE 400W, a black Toyota Prado which was trailing Dr Mutiso before the taxi she had boarded was blocked by another Toyota Prado, KDH 600A, before she was fatally shot.He was identified via CCTV footage, lead investigator Corporal Romana Oduor told the court. He also told the court that the suspects had trailed Dr Mutiso for some time before pouncing on the fateful day. Gathoni, who alleged he was a law student at a local university, was traced to his Lang'ata residence where they first observed his movements. Detectives noted that he had been shuffling between Nairobi and Kampala after the death of Dr Mutiso. It was suspected that his accomplices were hiding out in the neighbouring country. As he crossed the border, detectives kept a close eye on him and his movements. Upon return to Nairobi, police say they nabbed him in the city. He then led authorities to Uganda where the other two were arrested. After their capture, Uganda’s Foreign Affairs ministry processed an extradition request from its Nairobi counterpart. The court heard that the three were initially presented before the Chief Magistrate of Buganda Road Court at City Hall on August 31, 2026, before being handed over to Interpol in Kampala, who then handed them over to Kenyan police at the Malaba border on September 1, 2026.According to police, the intelligence-led operation had led them to their hideout in Kyanja Heights Flats, Nakawa suburb in Kampala, Uganda. In her ruling, the magistrate said the prosecution had established that the suspects were a flight risk, as they had allegedly fled Kenya after the murder of Dr Mutiso."This court finds that there are compelling reasons to warrant the detention of the three for 30 days in police custody," the court ruled. She ordered that the three be remanded at Kasarani, Kileleshwa and Kilimani police stations, respectively. The three were brought to court seven days after Rose Mbithe Mulwa, alias Rose Mbithe Ndetei, her children Chris and Angela Mulwa (both advocates), and police officer Elijah Kibellion Kimoi were taken before the High Court over the murder of Dr Mutiso. The four, however, did not plead to the charge and were remanded awaiting mental assessment until September 23, 2026.From left: Lawyer Angela Mulwa, her mother Rose Mbithe Mulwa and brother Chris Mulwa in court on August 25, 2026. She was charged together with Nelson Masiga Makaralu, with the two accused of conspiring to steal a Sh15 million Range Rover Sport belonging to the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB).The two were presented before the Mavoko court on Wednesday and charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code. The prosecution alleges that the two conspired to steal the motor vehicle, an offence they allegedly committed together with others not before the court. The two also face a second count of stealing the same motor vehicle, contrary to Section 278A of the Penal Code. The charge sheet states that they committed the offence on February 12, 2026, at Kathangaita area in Mlolongo, Machakos County. The court heard that the vehicle was parked at the home of Professor David Musyimi Ndetei, a director of the institute. In an alternative charge, the two are accused of handling stolen property. The prosecution alleges that on August 1, 2026, they were found in possession of the same Range Rover at Rose Residential Homes, Karen Kerarapon 14 West, in Nairobi County, while knowing or having reason to believe that it was stolen.Mulwa and Masiga also face a separate charge of malicious damage to property. According to the prosecution, the two, jointly with others not before the court, wilfully and unlawfully damaged a dwelling house belonging to Prof Ndetei. The home, in Kathangaita, Machakos County, estimated to be worth approximately Sh56 million, was destroyed on February 12, 2026.

Read briefing When President William Ruto took oath of office on September 13, 2022, his enemy had a name and a face. It was the system. It was State capture. It was former President Uhuru Kenyatta leaving empty coffers and, most impactful, Sh230 for a 2kg packet of maize flour (unga). His then deputy, Mr Rigathi Gachagua, in his inauguration speech, told Kenyans that his boss was inheriting a dilapidated economy. The problem then, was yesterday’s men.Four years later, in August 2026, the enemy has no single name. The enemy is everywhere, looming near and large, but wearing a uniform he remotely identifies as most likely worn by Mr Kenyatta.Currently, President Ruto is going around claiming that his predecessor is the one mobilising the opposition to kick him out in 2027.“Our president should relax. Call it electoral pressure, for all along he has mismanaged his politics to keep re-election pressure piling. But panic won’t save him. He needs to confront his challenges from a point of surgical precision,” said political commentator and scholar Prof Peter Kagwanja.Prof Kagwanja said the ease with which President Ruto has been changing his opinion about who exactly is to blame for the perceived strong wave of national dissent against him is not doing him any good.“We know President Ruto as a near-invincible politician who thrives under pressure. Of late, he is coming out as a man caving in, unable to know who exactly will be his competitor in 2027 and what he needs to tell the people so as to win the vote. He sometimes portrays himself as a cornered man,” he said.It started with the handshake between Mr Kenyatta and Raila Odinga that he blamed for disturbing his nascent rule. In the first year, every economic pain was blamed on Mr Kenyatta’s borrowing and Raila’s love for protests. The famous handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Harambee House in 2018. It was then that Raila had prescribed for the country twice-weekly protests which, to President Ruto and his allies, were about getting a share of the government. To National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah, the protests were being financed by Mr Kenyatta.“My message is for none other than Mr Kenyatta who is the single financier of Azimio chaos... Your properties will also be raided,” Mr Ichung’wah said at the time.President Ruto was emphatic that the government could not work because Raila was destructive and distractive.Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro addressing journalists at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi, on August 17, 2026.But Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro now calls the bluff, saying that “after we won power we realised it was easy to win the vote but another ball game when it came to governing ... we had no plan and we engaged in a lot of blame game and shenanigans”.Mr Nyoro said that to hide the confusion, the government resorted to escapist explanations, seeking to buy time. But in a Saturday interview with the Nation, President Ruto complained that “Kenyatta had set me up for failure and had promised his allies that I had six months to survive, then my presidency would collapse”. He added that Mr Kenyatta had ignored him and brushed him off in efforts to bury the hatchet and serve the country on a united front. As President Ruto searched for the functional button to press and get things right, he started a fallout with Mr Gachagua, who was impeached in October 2024. To him, Mr Gachagua was an enemy who had grown horns and become incompatible with the values of a progressive president whose calling was national and not ethnicised. But Mr Gachagua told the Nation on Sunday that “all those were explanations of a man who appeared not to understand why and how he had won the presidency”.“President Ruto’s biggest enemy was his mindset that he was the brightest of all Kenyans, capable of advising his advisors on how to advise him ... and where reason could not work, money, lies and force would straighten things out,” the former DP said.President William Ruto and Raila Odinga at State House, Nairobi, where Odinga was officially unveiled as Kenya’s candidate for the chairperson of the African Union Commission on August 27, 2024. Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025.President Ruto later said he had since found that Raila was not a bad man and invited him to form a broad-based government that would reflect national integration and cohesion. This was after, in July 2024, the Gen Z held serious protests against the government, ignited by the passage of the Finance Bill 2024.“This is the period I came to realise that President Ruto was paranoid and erratic in decision-making. He was sure that the Gen Z had been unleashed on him by either Mr Kenyatta, me or forces outside the country. He believed that a coup was being plotted against him and immediately brute force was assembled to deal with the issue,” Mr Gachagua said.He dared President Ruto to make up his mind about who was to blame for the Gen Z uprising.

Read briefing Dr Victoria Mutiso, a clinical psychologist who was gunned down in Nairobi. Preliminary findings indicate that she may have been followed from her home.Uganda will extradite two Kenyans suspected of killing Dr Victoria Mutiso, following their arrest in Kampala last Saturday. The extradition process is expected to take up to three days, after which Police Constable Collins Kiplangat Bett and Pius Muiru Mbugua will be released to the Interpol officers, who will then hand them over to the Kenyan Police.Kenyan detectives from the serious crimes unit at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) flew to Kampala on Friday and have since been working with Ugandan police and Interpol officers to arrest the two suspects.Read: Dr Mutiso Killers were paid Sh300,000 down payment, fresh court filings show “A combined team of Interpol, Kenyan crime busters and Ugandan intelligent security personnel led to the arrest of the two suspects who are now detained by the Ugandan Authorities awaiting extradition to face murder charges at the Kenyan High Court,” a DCI officer told the Daily Nation on Monday. The DCI officer said that the joint operation ended with arrest of the two suspects, and that Uganda’s Foreign Affairs ministry is processing an extradition request from its Nairobi counterpart.“Our officers have presented a request to the relevant Ugandan Foreign Ministry for processing of the two suspects,” our source stated. The Ugandan Foreign Affairs minister is liaising with the local Attorney General, who has in turn presented an application before a magistrate for extradition orders.Evidence on how Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, a prominent neuroscientist and a former director of African Institute of Mental and Brain Health was killed in a gangland-style shooting has been presented to the Ugandan Magistrate for analysis and processing. The aim is for the Ugandan Court to establish there is sufficient evidence which can lead to a conviction. The arraignment of the three brings to seven the numbers of suspects arrested and detained over the murder of Dr Mutiso, a prominent neuroscientist and a former director of African Institute of Mental and Brain Health.Besides PC Bett and Mr Mbugua, police are also tracing Inspector Kipkemoi Sang whose Jericho Pistol was used to gun down Dr Mutiso on July 29,2026 along Mawensi Road Kilimani sub-county Nairobi. The Daily Nation has learned that immediately after the Ugandan authorities conclude processing the extradition request, a message will be relayed to Kenya’s Foreign Affairs ministry which will then inform Attorney-General Dorcas Oduor.Ms Oduor will then hand the writs to Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga, who will then pass them on to his officer Victor Owiti.Mr Owiti will use the writs to process Mr Bett, Mr Mbugua and a third suspect, Samuel Karanja Gathoni in Kenya’s courts.“Extradition proceedings take a while but the good thing is that we have managed to arrest two suspects who had allegedly fled into the neighbouring country. No one involved in the murder of Dr Mutiso will escape justice and the long hand of the law,” the top officer told the Daily Nation. So far those arrested and detained over the cold blooded murder of Dr Mutiso, are nine. They are Rose Mbithe Mulwa alias Rose Mbith Ndetei, her children Angella, Mulwa and Chris Mulwa (both advocates of the High Court) and Police Constable Elijah Kibellion Kimoi (who allegedly shot Dr Mutiso).Others in custody are Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kevin Ngugi Kinuthia. They were detained for 30 days on request by a lead investigator Corporal Romana Oduor on August 10,2028.CPL Oduor said preliminary investigations showed that PC Kimoi is the one who shot Dr Mutiso.Rose Mbithe, Chris, Angella and PC Kimoi were charged with murder before Justice Kanyi Kimondo on August 26,2026.Justice Kimondo ordered they be remanded until September 23, 2026 for mental examination to establish whether they are mentally fit to stand trial.Follow our WhatsApp channel for breaking news updates and more stories like this. There was a stir in court as Rose Mulwa and her children made claims against the DCI and DPP.We come to you.
