Several people were injured in another attack on an international airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh, authorities say, days after Yemen’s Houthis claimed to have carried out similar strikes on the hub.Operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh were suspended on Saturday after the attack, the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement.More than a dozen ambulances were seen rushing to the airport, according to news agency Reuters, citing an eyewitness.The US embassy said it was “aware of attacks on King Khalid International Airport” and urged American citizens to avoid the airport and surrounding areas.The attack comes a day after authorities said three Saudis including a pilot were killed in two attacks on the airport by the Iran-backed Houthis the day prior. Another three people were killed in Houthi attacks on two Saudi airports on 6 and 7 October.A source at a local hospital told AFP that dozens of people had been wounded in Saturday’s attack.“I saw 401 hit, I saw injured in front of my eyes. Everyone was running,” an eyewitness who said they had been at gate 401 in the domestic terminal told the news agency.Western embassies in Saudi Arabia have warned their citizens away from the airport, while the UK Foreign Office told British nationals to stay away “until the airport is secure and to monitor the advice of the Saudi authorities”.Several Gulf airlines said they had cancelled their flights to and from the airport, with Kuwait Airways citing the “security situation” there.All flights to Riyadh have either been diverted or cancelled, aviation tracker Flightradar shows. Doctors had been asked to report to hospitals to address the situation, a medical source told AFP.“We were told we are dealing with a ‘serious emergency situation’,” the medical source told the agency.The suspected attack comes during a marked escalation in renewed fighting between Yemen’s Saudi-backed government forces and the Houthis, who control most of the country’s north-west.The Houthis say they are targeting Saudi Arabia over its support for government forces in Yemen’s civil war.The conflict worsened after the Houthis seized strategically important stretches of the Red Sea coast in a rapid offensive.That included the port of Mokha on the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which is the narrowest point of the Red Sea and a chokepoint for global shipping. Nine people, including two children, are reported dead after a mass shooting and an hours-long standoff in Erie.According to CBS affiliate Erie News Now, police were called to Perry Street around 5 p.m. on Friday after witnesses reported seeing a man firing a gun before he entered a home.Two women were found dead in the street, and more victims were found dead inside the home.Police said that the suspect was also found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.On Saturday morning, police confirmed the death total and said that all of the deaths occurred prior to their arrival. They also said that no additional shots were fired after police arrived, and that during their response, sounds heard were flash-bangs associated with their tactical response.Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said that a tragedy of this magnitude is difficult to put into words.“There are no words that can adequately express the magnitude of the loss of life here,” he said. “Out of respect for the victims and their loved ones, I will not discuss the specific details of what our officers encountered today. Our investigators are working diligently as we speak to establish the full circumstances of what occurred. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s announcement that the execution of the convicted Fort Hood mass shooter would be shown in public caught people across the Pentagon and the Army off guard, three sources familiar with the matter told CNN.Hegseth made the announcement in an interview with far-right podcaster Jack Posobiec aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln on Wednesday, which he’d visited to give a speech to the crew welcoming them home from their deployment to the Middle East.“We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” Hegseth said during the interview.That comment was the first time many in the Army and Pentagon heard about the idea of a firing squad’s execution of Nidal Hasan in Texas being made public, and there were immediately questions about what “public” would mean. There are Army regulations about who can watch a military execution, including family of the prisoner and of the victims, media representatives and a chaplain.But it was decided by Hegseth, acting Army Secretary Adam Telle, and Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell and his staff that “public” would mean it would be livestreamed, one source familiar said. The Pentagon then confirmed as much to the media, saying in a statement, “The Secretary is correct. It will be livestreamed. Details will follow.”The Army referred questions to the Pentagon, and a Pentagon spokesperson said they had nothing to add beyond Thursday’s confirmation that it would be live-streamed.The idea has shocked many service members and veterans and provoked a bipartisan backlash.
