How Investment in newborn units is saving preterm babies in Siaya

A pregnant woman. Photo I ReutersFor years, Siaya County recorded some of the highest rates of child mortality in the country, with an average of 63 deaths for every 1,000 live births. A 2024 survey by Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) found that inadequate health infrastructure accounted for nearly half of preventable deaths among premature babies, robbing the county of some of its youngest lives. But over the past three years, the establishment of newborn units at hospitals in Siaya and Bondo has begun to change that picture. Premature babies weighing less than one kilogram at birth are now surviving and thriving against the odds. There are now partnerships giving these newborns a fighting chance, while helping to bring down infant mortality in Siaya County. At 8am, the cries of newborns pierce through the busy corridors of the Siaya county referral hospital. But here, those tiny cries are more than just noise, they are a sound of hope, a sign that these fragile babies are alive and fighting to survive.Among them is 24-year-old Emily Omondi, cradling her daughter, Kayla, a tiny bundle she describes as nothing short of a miracle.Kayla’s tight grip is a quiet show of strength — a determination to stay alive. Emily was six months pregnant when she was diagnosed with a bacterial infection. The medication she received would later leave her hospitalized. After days of pain and...

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man at the Kitengela police station. Eric Otieno a Kenyan-American citizen, is alleged to have died inside the station’s cells after he was arrested together with two friends while leaving a nightclub on September 18. His family alleges neglect by police officer as he had underlying conditions, maintaining he had committed no offence when he was arrested.”Sasa ameshikwa akitoka kwa clabu hapo barabara ya deliverance akaniambia I think they need just 1000 bob,” said David Mwangi.Georginah Mwawasi, his wife, said that Otieno was arrested by plain-cloth officers, arguing that he made no offence. “The others were put in cuffs but he was not cuffed and they were put in the lorry. According to the message he sent he said ‘there’s no reason why we are being taken in’,” she narrated. One of the men arrested alongside Otieno gave an account on the incident that raises more questions about what happened inside the station. He claims Otieno known by his street name, J, offered to clean the cells in exchange for his release. But what began as an apparent attempt to secure his freedom would take a deadly turn. "He was rolling down and I started seeing him convulsing an...

Digital lending grows as loans double to Ksh.110 billion

The Central Bank’s 2025 Bank Supervision Annual Report shows that in just one year, the amount owed to digital lenders nearly doubled to Ksh.110 billion, as the number of licensed lenders rose from 85 to 195. Digital lending is growing rapidly under the Central Bank’s watch. The Central Bank’s 2025 Bank Supervision Annual Report shows that in just one year, the amount owed to digital lenders nearly doubled to Ksh.110 billion, as the number of licensed lenders rose from 85 to 195.The CBK says it is strengthening its oversight of loan pricing, lending practices and customer data as the market expands. At the end of 2024, licensed digital credit providers had Ksh.55.2 billion in loans outstanding.Over the following year, the Central Bank licensed 110 more providers. As the regulated market expanded, so did its loan book.Outstanding credit surpassed Ksh.100 billion in September 2025 and reached Ksh.110.1 billion by December, almost twice its level a year earlier. The number of loan accounts also rose, from about 4 million to 6.7 million, an increase of roughly 71 per cent in just a year. That jump points to a much larger digital credit market, although loan accounts are not the same as individual borrowers, given that one customer can hold more than one loan account. And this market is no longer limited to short-term personal credit. The CBK says licensed providers are also offering loa...

JAMILA'S MEMO: What is your surname?

Let us talk about ethnic balance. Let us insist that every Kenyan community sees itself represented in its government. But let us never confuse inclusion with tribal patronage.Public office is not inheritance. Neither is it community property. And a government job is not a favour from one tribe to another. It belongs to the Kenyan who deserves it. In my memo tonight, I ask: What is your surname? Kamau? Wanyonyi? Otieno? Kiprotich? Mutua? Abdurahman? Because apparently, in Kenya, that may sometimes be more important than what is written on your CV.This week, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa gave us a rather extraordinary example of how he thinks people from his community who are appointed to senior public positions should behave. Now, it is very easy to dismiss this as another politician saying something outrageous. But perhaps we should stay with it for a moment.Because maybe Barasa has simply said loudly what too many Kenyans have quietly come to accept: that public office belongs to communities.A minister is appointed and we say, Tumepata waziri. A PS is appointed: Tumepata PS. Someone from “our community” gets a parastatal position: Serikali imetukumbuka. And when they are removed? Tumepokonywa. But who exactly is “we”?A Cabinet Secretary from Western is not the Cabinet Secretary for the Luhya community. A Principal Secretary from Central does not work for Kikuyus. A parastatal chair...

Baringo community turns 2,000 acres into a shared haven for wildlife and livestock

Kiborgoch was established after community elders set aside the land as a dry season grazing area. For generations, the Endorois pastoralist community in Baringo has depended on land for pasture, water, and livestock. But as pressure on these resources grows, wildlife and livestock are increasingly competing for the same space. On 2,000 acres of community land, the Endorois community living around Kiborgoch Community Wildlife and Wetland Conservancy is pursuing a different approach. Here, cattle, sheep and goats graze alongside zebras and ostriches, as well as antelopes like gazelles, kudu and waterbucks. This is a community conservancy model where the local community owns the land and collectively decides how to manage it for their livelihoods, wildlife, and the wider environment.Kiborgoch was established after community elders set aside the land as a dry season grazing area, recognising its importance during periods when pasture and water became scarce in the surrounding hills.Joel Kiprop, the Manager of Kiborgoch Conservancy, says the decision was rooted in the community's need to protect a reliable grazing area.“Kiborgoch means an open savanna where people can see far across the grass and shrubs. The name is also associated with a medicinal tree that was once found in that area,” Kiprop says.“The community elders set the land aside so that during the rainy season, the livestock...
