Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are probing a widely circulated video presented on social media as a robbery along the Nairobi Expressway, even as it emerged that the alleged victim was Kasarani Member of Parliament Ronald Karauri. In a video posted on Friday, September 4, Karauri dispelled the claims of a robbery, disclosing that he was a passenger in the white vehicle seen in the video. He explained that he had been travelling from a meeting when he found that the vehicle door could not close properly. The MP said he was forced to stop on the Expressway to fix the problem, clarifying that the people seen approaching his vehicle were not criminals but had come to help him with the door. “I want to clarify that I was the passenger in the white car shown in the video. I was coming from a meeting when the door could not close properly, leaving me in some distress, so I had to stop on the Expressway. The people seen in the video were not goons; they were with me and came to help fix the door. We managed to close it and continued with our journey. They were simply young people who had stopped to assist me,” Karauri recounted. His clarification came after images and video footage from the Expressway on Thursday, September 3, showed several people getting out of one vehicle and moving towards another, prompting claims online that motorists had been confronted by suspected goons. The DCI issued a statement on Friday saying that detectives from its Kilimani office had identified the people in the footage, including the MP, and recorded their statements. According to the directorate, preliminary findings from the accounts given to investigators indicate that the incident was indeed not a robbery as initially portrayed on social media. “Preliminary investigations, based on the recorded statements, indicate that the incident was not a robbery. The alleged victim has been identified as Hon. Ronald Karauri, Member of Parliament for Kasarani,” the statement read.Detectives are continuing with enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and the subsequent circulation of the footage. The investigation is expected to document the facts behind the encounter and determine how the footage came to be linked to an alleged robbery. Meanwhile, the DCI urged the public to avoid circulating unverified claims and to share credible information that may assist investigators. The incident comes amid public concern over rising cases of robbery and goons, with recent footage sparking allegations that Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano was attacked while on her way to work, claims she dismissed.
