The Cabinet has announced plans to tighten leadership and oversight of the government's priority projects to ensure they are completed before the 2027 General Elections. The announcement followed a high-level meeting of the Joint Cabinet Committee on the Discharge of Government Business, chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. In a statement after the meeting, Kindiki said the Cabinet agreed to tighten the leadership of the government's programmes and President William Ruto's flagship projects even as the country heads towards elections."Agreed that line ministries firm up the leadership of key programmes and flagship Government projects, to consolidate the development agenda ahead of the end of the first term of this administration," Kindiki stated. The move comes as government officials seeking elective posts in 2027 look forward to resigning and focusing on their campaigns.According to the Cabinet, the move by some officials to seek elective positions should not slow government projects, especially key programmes and Kenya Kwanza's flagship projects.Among the key projects the government is moving to tighten its leadership and accelerate progress is the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway expansion, which President Ruto fast-tracked, moving its completion date from June 2027 to April 2027.Under its Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), other government flagship projects expected to be accelerated include the Affordable Housing Programme, Agriculture and food security, and the Universal Health Coverage (UHC), among other programmes. The Tuesday meeting comes a day after Head of Public Service Felix Koskei warned government officials, especially principal secretaries eyeing elective seats in the 2027 General Election, against neglecting their official duties or using public resources for political campaigns before the statutory resignation deadline.According to Koskei, government officials interested in contesting next year’s elections must continue discharging their responsibilities fully until they lawfully leave office. The public service head further warned against a slowdown in government programmes or disruption of public services."There must be no administrative vacuum, no disengagement from the core mandate, no slowing of implementation. Public resources must not be diverted to partisan political activity. Explaining government programmes is our duty; campaigning is not,” Koskei said.According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), public officials seeking elective posts in 2027 should resign by February 10, 2027, to be cleared to vie.
